Spock Fans Love Bones, Too!
This evening I got an order for an audio book and PDF version of DeForest Kelley Up Close and Personal from a fan fiction Facebook page that is Spock-centric, SAHAJ CONTINUED. It isn’t a page that I previously considered within “my target audience” so I would have hesitated promoting my book there for fear of being deemed a spammer.
Luckily, Leah Charifson, its host/moderator, invited me to befriend her; when I did, she touted the original 2001 version to the moon and back, which gave me permission to mention that I have an expanded edition out for Star Trek’s 50th anniversary.
The mention led another person, KS Langley, to buy two versions of the expanded edition, even though she had already read and loved the 2001 edition, because the 50th anniversary print edition has 55 pages of additional anecdotes and more than 30 pages of rarely and never-seen-before images in it, and the audio version has more than fifteen minutes of actual voice mail messages in it from Carolyn and De Kelley and other Hollywood notables. These are compelling “extras” that can turn happy readers of the first edition into eager buyers of expanded versions.
So tonight I’m rethinking where else I ought to go to let more people know about the new book. There are literally hundreds of Star Trek-related sites that aren’t sanctioned by Paramount or CBS and it can’t hurt to reach out to them and let them know about my book. It’s pretty apparent that a great many fans won’t be visiting Paramount/CBS-sanctioned sites to look for my book since CBS ticked them off by getting cranky and lawyering up to fight fan productions whose quality rivals their own –not that they’d find my book there anyway, since it is self-published and CBS doesn’t tout stuff that won’t make them a definite bundle. (That said, CBS Home Entertainment did give me official written permission to use the adapted front cover and the studio photos that appear inside the book, for which I’m immensely grateful!)
There are fan fiction Facebook pages whose focus is on different characters from the original series: Sulu, Chekov, Kirk, Uhura, Spock, and Scotty. I have little doubt that McCoy is also a much-loved character to these fans, so I need to start reaching out to them this week, I suddenly realize.
With the 50th anniversary of Star Trek less than two weeks away, now is the time to let other Trek characters’ fans know that I have a life story that heavily involves De that might interest them…
If you personally know additional fan fiction and other TOS Trek character-centric sites, please either tell me about them or them about me fast... the 50th anniversary is right around the corner!

Thank you, Mary! Will do–TODAY! HUGS!
Oh, and one more–Star Trek.com.
StarTrek.com is already aware of the book and me. Because it isn’t a Simon and Schuster title, I expect they won’t tout it for me… Thanks again!
