Ingenuity

Today I’m being creative in a new way.

I was just about ready to get a haircut…and then the corona virus came to town and my barber shop closed, as did every other hair salon in the area.

What to do?

Today I was growling over my hair and trying to figure how much longer I could live with it. Then I figured it would be at least a few weeks before we get back to normal here, and three weeks was too long.

So, since I’ve groomed and clipped many a dog, and I have the tools, I thought, “I bet I can do this.”

But I hesitated…

Then I thought, “I mean, I’m pretty well locked in… nobody is gonna see me for weeks probably… so what’s  the big deal if I really botch it up, anyway?”

That did it. I got out my scissors, got out my comb, and went to work.

It turned out okay. Not as well as a professional barber–far from it–but well enough to feel like I can live with what I have until I get to a pro again…

I was amazed at how hard it is to try to cut your own hair while looking into a mirror, though. Your hands and the scissors don’t look the same way in a mirror… they’re backward… so trying to watch what I was trying to do was frustrating, so I ended up just cutting by feel. I pulled the hair between my fingers and cut it above where my fingers were. (With short hair, this is doable. I have no idea how anyone would go about cutting long hair themselves…)

Anyway, now that it’s cut and I haven’t colored it in a while it looks pretty sparse, so I’m coloring it again (right now, as I type this blog) to see if the color “beefs up” the look. I have very fine hair, and very straight hair, so when it’s not colored, it can look pretty sparse. I have enough hair; it’s just very fine.

In a few minutes I’ll have the coloring completed and I’ll take a before-and-after picture so you can see the difference in appearance…

Here’s the before look:

…and here’s the after-coloring look,

teased a bit to give it that “jazzy” look…

Not bad. But don’t worry: I’m not going to quit my day job!
