Just a Hunch ….Something’s Coming!

Sometimes I get a hunch–an intuitive feeling of certainty about something–and I’m getting it now.
I put out an intention to the universe (and in this blog, and in a few emails to supremely happy past and current clients) that I want to land another client or two who wants to use me up to ten hours per week on a retainer (pay or play) basis.
Working on a retainer basis protects me when I schedule time to serve clients and they don’t send me anything to do. Sadly, too many clients assume that I don’t mind being “stood up” and that I can afford to sit twiddling my thumbs or scrambling to fill my schedule when they don’t follow through.
A Happy Retainer Story/Case Study
I work on a retainer basis with my favorite client. I’m very conscientious about it: I don’t ever allow either of us to receive less than we deserve, and she has always felt that she and her company get more than she ever expected to get from a freelance writer in terms of quality. (She thinks I’m pretty fabulous, and I know she and her organization are!)
I know she has never regretted working on a retainer basis because she’s proactive and always makes sure I have something to do. (Retainer agreements also engender a kind of accountability–no one likes to pay for work they don’t get!). Only once has she felt compelled to say to me, “Start a new invoice. The remaining time on the existing one that hasn’t been redeemed, that’s fine. Write it off. The extra money’s yours.” That was like getting a $300+ bonus.
And still she sends me sizable birthday and Christmas bonuses, too!
But I digress (happily, to wax poetic about how great it is to have a great client who truly recognizes the value–the ROI–that I bring to our business relationship).
And oh guess what–we’re virtual besties now, too. I adore her as a person. She has read two of my books, including Womb Man–she wrote a review of it at Amazon–and told me in an email that she thinks I’m one of the most amazing and talented people she’s ever met. (… aw shucks… toe in rug… I can live for a year on a compliment like this one!
And the best news is that I feel exactly the same way about her! Talk about a Mutual Admiration Society!!!
End of digression. Let’s get back to the main topic, shall we?
YES! (I hear ya! Stop shovin’!!!)
I have a hunch that I’m about to land another client that I’ll love serving as much as I love serving her. They’re not in the same niche or business, but they’re in an arena that I can sink my heart and soul into every bit as much as I’m able to in her company’s enormous sphere of influence.
There are a couple more editing opportunities for up to ten hours per week, too, that I’ve thrown my hat into the ring for. I feel less certain about them, but I’ll take them on, happily!
Fingers crossed…prayers said…
I think something is going to happen this week that will have me feeling a whole lot less “on thin ice” than I feel right now with the puny Social Security and pension I get on a monthly basis.
I’ll keep you in the loop!
