I Am Truly in Despair for America

The impeachment trial is becoming almost unbearable to watch as GOP Senators ignore, walk out, read books, build paper airplanes and pointedly ignore their oath to the Constitution and to their most recent oath to sit and impartially review the evidence that the impeachment team has against Trump.

 

They aren’t doing their jobs. They are in dereliction of their duty during this enormous challenge to the continuing viability of our republic.

 

What they are doing now is exactly what Trump has been impeached for doing: obstructing Congress and abusing their power. Can they be impeached for the same offenses? If they can, they should be. If they can’t, they should be voted out of office at the next available opportunity.

 

And the real tragedy is that 3/4 of US Senators have to vote to impeach, if Trump is going to be dismissed from office. The likelihood of that happening is the same as finding an ice cube in hell since the GOP has jammed its fingers in its collective ears and is refusing to hear the evidence against him. This is not normal behavior from grown men and women!  This is the behavior of three year old brats during temper tantrums.

 

I want to know what kind of hold Russia, Trump and other oligarchs have on these GOP scofflaws.

 

I also wonder if Chief Justice Roberts has the power to insist on witnesses… and if he does, if he will.

 

If he has that power and doesn’t exert it, he is an accomplice and in dereliction of his duty to adjudicate the greatest challenge facing our nation in decades. I’m watching him with an eagle eye. He will be the lynch pin, if he has the power to act in the best interest of the nation…

 

I see facts on the prosecution side and fingernails on blackboard on the defense side. They can’t exonerate him, so they yammer and obfuscate and cry like petulant babies instead of calling witnesses that can challenge the facts that have already been uncovered and are documented without any help from them or the White House.

 

The White House has told its people to ignore subpoenas and to refuse to provide information sought by the impeachment committee. Innocent people don’t act that way; only guilty people do that.

 

I am depressed over this thing. The future of the country is at stake and it looks like half of the Congress doesn’t care and has no plans to set it right.

 

The founders foresaw this, but not to this extent, I don’t think.

 

The three branches of government are supposed to act as checks and balances against tyranny, not as rubber stamps for it.

 

It’s enough to make this patriot cry.
