Emerald City Comic Con

DeForest Kelly: Up Close and Personal

I tried ordering a new t-shirt at Cafe Press to wear to the Emerald City Comic Con convention with a mashup image of Kelley/Urban on the front and an image of my book cover on the back. Cafe Press stopped the order because of a possible copyright violation.

I figured the violation might have been the Kelley/Urban mashup image, so I took that off and put my book cover on both sides of the t-shirt (not ideal, but better than nothing on the front) and again reminded them that I own the book cover image; I got written permission from CBS to use it as a cover image.  So hopefully the order will go through now without further ado, because the convention is right around the corner: March 2nd.

(UPDATE ON MY T-SHIRT ORDER, Feb 13: OK, Cafe Press is back in my good graces. I sent them the release letter from CBS yesterday after getting repeated automatic denials, telling them that I was De’s personal assistant and that I am his chief legacy- keeper, AND pointing them to this website to see the interviews and such I have done about him, and they have now agreed to print the shirt. Hallelujah!!)

The front of the Cafe Press t-shirt will read “No BONES About It: I’m a DeForest Kelley/Karl Urban Fan” (which is why the mashup image would have been SOOOO much better–alas!–and I don’t have a copyright-free image of Karl, so that was that!) Lisa is making me a button with Karl Urban on it that I can wear, so the shirt WILL have Karl on it, come hell or high water. YAY!

On the back under the book cover image is “Available at Amazon & YellowBalloonPublications.com.”  I’ll have a few books in my SUV and lots of post cards in hand in case con-goers inquire after seeing the shirt. I hope to spot some vendors I know there and ask them to put some of the postcards on their tables. They’re usually very amenable to doing that for me,as there isn’t a lot of DeForest Kelley stuff at conventions anymore and they loved him a lot!

I tried to get into Emerald City Comic Con as a speaker to talk about De–told them I’d speak for free in exchange for a book table–but they didn’t get back to me, and now I can see why: they have a huge, very impressive line-up of speakers!

I’m hoping to meet Karl Urban at least briefly. I want to give him one of De’s scarves and let him know how much I think De would have loved his McCoy.  I sooo wish they had met. I know both would have loved it.

I plan to take several cameras so the folks who are with me can snap images of the things they want to remember, too–and so they (and I) can get images of meeting Karl (if we get the chance) without having to hand the same camera back and forth and slowing things down. It might be a very brief encounter and I want to be sure it’s captured in images!

Counting the days down now!
