333 = DeForest Kelley Visitations!

3:33 and 333 hold special meaning for me.

 

Before Star Trek, DeForest Kelley appeared in a pilot for Gene Roddenberry called 333 Montgomery Street. The pilot was based on  a famous criminal defense attorney named Jake Ehrlich whose business address (I gather) was 333 Montgomery Street in San Francisco. Jake Ehrlich specifically chose De to portray him.

 

But 3:33 continued to reappear during my decades-long association with De and Carolyn.

 

I stopped counting the number of times they would call me at work at exactly 3:33 p.m. to see how things were going “in your young life”.  I even mentioned to them once, “What is it with you and 333?!”

 

They asked, “What?”

 

I said, “You almost always call me at 3:33 here at work and at home!”

 

“We do?”

 

“You do!”

 

“Are you pulling a Jake Ehrlich on me?”

 

(That one went right over Carolyn’s head, but De got it!)

 

And ever since De passed away in 1999, I’ve been inundated with 333’s.

 

If I get up in the middle of the night to pee or to write, I will invariably (without forethought) check the time at exactly 3:33!

 

It happened again just 12 minutes ago, which is what induced me to write this blog post.

 

It happens in the afternoon, too.  It isn’t a conscious thing. I’m not even thinking of De when it happens (I mean, seriously–I had to move on from thinking about De so much after he died, to maintain my equilibrium and sanity!), and then 3:33 pops up to remind me, so I say, “Hi, De! Thank you!”

 

If there is such a thing as life after death and signaling to the living, 3:33 is exactly the kind of signal De would send to let me know he’s “just checkin’ up on you” (I have a recording of his voice telling me this very thing!); that, and un-tethered yellow balloons!

 

I feel blessed. As rational as I am, and as unconvinced as I am (most of the time) about our ability to retain our consciousness and relationships after death (even from lifetime to lifetime, as people who believe in reincarnation figure), I find it astonishing that 333 continues to “find” me wherever I am and stop me in my tracks long enough that I find myself saying, “OK, De, I get it! Why you’re still hanging with me is beyond my ken, but that you’re still hanging with me seems to be a foregone conclusion!”

 

I know De and I had a conversation about our mothers when he was in the hospital. I said something like (you’ll find it in my book, I just don’t recall the exact conversation anymore, but it was fresh in my memory when I wrote it down at that time!) “There are times when I just want to pick up the phone and talk to my mom, but I know she’s not here anymore…” (this was about eight months after her passing) and he said, “I feel exactly the same way about my mother!”

 

I said something like, “I think they’re somehow reaching out to us, when we feel like that,” and he said, “I do, too. I just wish there were some way to know they are!”

 

I said, “Exactly!”

 

We both got a little misty, then…

 

So…if there’s a way to reach across the veil, I suppose our loved ones do it whenever they find an opportunity … one they know we’ll recognize as a sign from them in some way… so we still feel watched over and loved.

 

And OMG!  I just now looked up “333” on Google, and this is what popped up:
